Tantra: enlightenment to revolution: 14 (British Museum)

Worthwhile
A heavily and well illustrated book which I presume must include everything from the exhibition itself. The work begins in the 6th century continuing right up to present day and examines Tantra as a major cultural, philosophical and religious current within Hinduism and Buddhism and even looks at its influence on some modern artists and musicians. Although I have the impression that many of the subjects could be gone into in much more detail given the scope of the book there is really allot of information provided here. A good overall introduction to the subject that can be read as an academic work or a nice coffee table book for anyone with an appreciation for Asian art.

Clear exposition
Learned a lot both from the pictures and the text. An excellent exposition of an often misunderstood subject.

Very wordy...
I bought this direct from the BM. I have to say I was disappointed that such a large expensive volume wasnt as visually rich as it could have been, nor better designed. It's very off-piutting to have reams of tiny writing taking up only half pages throughout, neither was it properly organised into themes, it was very wordy as well which was distracting & boring which seemed to be compensating for the lack of social and political context to the subject of Tantra, which appears to me to have a politically subversive theme going on. Indeed themes were missing which could have organised the subject in a more socially coherent way putting the whole practice & philosophy of Tantra in a more relevant understandable social context , such as: menstrual blood as political..., gender or biological sex themes, death and tantra, chronology of various themes, social organization, etc., not just trawling through the history in the conventional manner. Hiatory can be boring. So history needs to be combined with themes, & themes need to be more poignantly concerned with social issues.

Beautiful book
This book was high on my must have list for over a year, but shipping from the UK was quite expensive. I was therefore thrilled to find it on sale here! The book gives an overview of the history and practices of classical tantra ( not the BS woo woo workshop stuff that's prevalent here in the States). It's well researched and has lots of incredible images, paintings, and photos of classical texts. It's a must have if you're a student of tantra.
